Dr. Alain Mukwege is a physician and a Research Associate for the University of Michigan School of Public Health with a research focus on Women’s Health and Social Epidemiology. With a background as a healthcare provider from the Democratic Republic of Congo, a low-income country from Central Africa, Alain Mukwege aspires at bridging the gap between tailored medical healthcare and data driven health policies in developing countries where research capabilities are often lacking.
This understanding has led him to pursue a training in Clinical research and Translational Science from the prestigious Mayo Graduate School where under the mentorship of Dr. Sean Dowdy and Dr. Emmanuel Trabucco, he developed skills for clinical and epidemiological research. Following graduation from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, he co-founded the International Center for Applied Research and Training (ICART). ICART is a collaboration between the Panzi Foundation, an organization specialized in the psychosocial reintegration of survivors of gender-based violence, and the University of Michigan. Regarding the center, his contributions included the drafting of the charter of the research center and the training of local Congolese investigators in research design, data collection, data management, data analysis. As a result of its valuable work, this institution has been the recipient of numerous grants, notably of the World Bank in 2018 and from the university of Montreal in 2022.
As a Research Associate for the University of Michigan, Dr. Alain Mukwege has worked on numerous NIH funded studies including the Incontinence Research Intervention Study (IRIS), and the NIH funded Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN). His areas of expertise include research proposal development, research tools development, ethical review, and research implementation.
